From a horizontal perspective, it sticks out about 1/4 to the sides and about 1/2" to the front, thus being the heart of it's functionallity since having it more retracted would return exposure to the fiberglass. From the vertical standpoint, the thickness of the plate itself is about 1/32", thus not being a real burden for ground clearance issues. Here is a shot that helps my explanation...
