Freestyle. Don't knock it until you drive it. Then look at the safety ratings, the price, and wonder why you looked at the expensive Highlander or the overly-bloated Saturn. Definitely look at the Freestyle and the Outback.

Is that the Ford station-wagon looking thing? If so, I think she already looked at it, and actually liked it. They've been looking at cars for awhile now, here's her thoughts on what she's driven:
RX300 - She likes Escape/Mariner - She likes Redline VUE - She likes, GMS not available on 06s Toureg - She likes, but worried about reliability MDX - Too big Envoy - Too big Equinox - Going to drive this week, might be too plastic Pilot - Too big CRV - Too slow Explorer - Indifferent Pacifica - Too soccer momish ML320/350/430 - Not interested
Haven't checked into the Murano, but other that these SUVs, are we missing anything? She's not really into the Outback and other station-wagon hybrids..

grand cherokee? the new '05+ WK JGC's are pretty nice....especially w/ the hemi. the 4.7L is quite adequate in my WJ, but considering the WK porked up a bit over the older models, stepping up to the hemi would net a justifiable HP boost....and for '06 the overland trim will return. just a thought.

My buddy just got an '04 Grand Cher. w/ the Overland for his wife. Oh nice! Can't wait to ride in it on ski trips this winter! Mmm suede inserts. Got it for 17k. 32k on it and a 3-4k trade in. Seemed like a deal to me.

not a fan of the Freestyle, its quite slow and looks like a station wagon.
The Vue is a really nice vehicle, especially in the Redline trim and with the Honda V6! I used to sell them while I was in college and everyone that bought one loved them! They have a really solid powertrain and great service/sales dept.
If you can get over the cheap interior its a great vehicle! It is actually a contender for me and my fiance. She really likes the Nissan Murano but for the price a Redline Vue is a steal! We are still not sure if we like the CVT on the Murano enough to buy it.
If im not mistaken the tranmission on the VUE is a 5speed auto from Toyota.....I say go for the redline! The 06 Vue should have had the facelife back in 02 when they debuted!
The current Vue with the unpainted bumpers looks so cheap, thats the reason we are looking into the redline. I wish Saturn would step it up a couple notches with the interior quality and options but for the price they are not bad.
I would take a V6 Vue over most any of its competition for the time being. Also What does she think of the Liberty? My friends parents have two and they love them. They suck gas but are a pretty solid unit! We test drove a Equinox and it has a very similar plasticy feel and a powertrain that leaves much to be desired.

04 overland? for 17k before trade? that's a steal. around here that's at least a $25k jeep on a really good day - when i bought mine i passed on an '04 overland w/ similar mileage for $27-28k because they weren't moving on the price.
but i think the suede inserts were only on the '02 overlands....for '03/04 they went to a two-tone leather.

Is she interested in the '05 Pathfinder? I rented one a few months ago, and speaking as an SUV hater was thoughoughly impressed. Wasn't the least bit unwieldly, drove like a car, and the 270 HP/291 Lb/Ft V6 that thinks it's an 8 didn't hurt, either. Extremely comfortable, rode nice, much better than the Durango I rented here in Vegas a little over a year ago.

Please explain... I think I am misinterpreting you to say that the automaker knows better what car I want to own than I do. I am glad that you at least see my vision for perfection, even if you seem more resigned than I am that nobody is trying to achieve it.
I think I overstated my point of the redesign that should take place for every car every 4-6 years. A ground-up redesign does not necessarily mean a completely new platform, however, it needs to be more than the facelift the VUE just received.
I still hold that this level of redesign is necessary to remain competitive and successful in the current marketplace.
