However, there is a difference between automakers building a car that is a current niche for the consumer and a car that is a logical choice for the consumer.

Please explain... I think I am misinterpreting you to say that the automaker knows better what car I want to own than I do. I am glad that you at least see my vision for perfection, even if you seem more resigned than I am that nobody is trying to achieve it.

Explanation: Car enthusiasts like you and I long for the day that we can log on to the Internet, design our own car with our own layout, number of doors, sedan/hatch/wagon/minivan/truck/SUV, the engine we want with the amount of pistons and fuel efficiency that we want with options like HID, navigation, polished burlwood and Nappa leather and suede lined seats all at no cost as well as the size and style wheels that we want. Then charge it to a credit card and have it shipped in a box to our front doors so we can assemble it ourselves.

The adult Lego set.

However the marketplace does not tailor to you and I individually, so in essence, automakers do not build for individuals. They build for the average consumer. In actuality they do not, but they think they know more than we do.

I don't know any simpler way to put it.

You used to own a G35C right? The interior on those is cheap as hell too.

uh - am i misreading something, or are you making a direct comparison between an infiniti G35 interior and a saturn VUE interior?

yes, i did own a G35c, and while the interior is not necessarily up to par with other mid-$30k cars, it is waaayyyy above the fisher price VUE interior.

there's cheap, and then there's "not as nice as its competitors". the VUE is cheap; the G35 just isn't (or wasn't - the '05 revisions largely address this) up to par with the other players in that price class.

though, quite frankly, i was never disappointed with the tactile quality of the G35. it did develop squeaks and rattles, but the leather seemed fine to me, the dash plastics didn't feel like they were from the walmart toy aisle, and the switches and controls were acceptable as well.

i don't need connolly leather, wool carpeting, and inlaid birds-eye maple to feel like i'm sitting in an interior of acceptable quality. however, when i feel like i'm sitting in a $25k little tikes cozy coupe, i think there's a problem.

Well, after they drove almost every SUV and AWD station wagon on the planet, they ended up buying a new 2005 RX330. Fully loaded, got about $4K off sticker with some work (nothing like negotiating on the last day of the month!), and we'll take delivery sometime next week.

Time to get the SHO ready for sale now..
