Girlfriend just had her general maintenance done on her 2002 Sunfire. They changed the belts, and now when I drive the car on acceleration there is this squeeling noise. Is it normal for new belts to be squeeling?? Thats it.
I ask as I am heading on a huge trip 13 hours from home and I am worried something bad might happen??
Thanks in advance

No, that is not normal, take it back and have them fix it.

Ya I checked the belts out, it looks really shiney on the upper side. I can push it in with my finger about an inch.

shiny?

the tread IS on the right side, right?

an INCH? anything more than a 1/4" movement is starting to say you have too much play, IE slippage, IE squealing.

Threads are down. maybe not an inch, say 3/4. I'd say they must have either not tightened it enough or it has come loose.

the tensioner should automatically take care of that.

the treads should be facing inwards on any ribbeb pulley, and away from any smooth idler, etc.

check tension on the tensioner, see if its loose, floppy, sloppy, etc..

A 2002 needed a new alt? Seems a little premature, how many miles are on the Sunfire?

Have a safe trip.

Ya I was thinking the same thing. It only has 33,000 kilometres on it.. It wasn't effecting the battery or any charging issues. Simply was a squeaky belt I thought.
