You have a point , but then you don't have a point .
There is a such thing of having passion over a car yes , BUT spending money on things you dont need thats something diffrent. And spending money on a Contour makes her shake her head even more , If it was a BMW , AUDI or something of that nature I think I might have a better chance of her understanding .
IMO... whether it's spending money on things that you don't need, or not, she should be supportive of you spending money on one of your passions and on something that makes you happy. Whether the car is a Contour SE, or a flashy Audi, should make no difference...
I think that if she loves you, she should be able to sacrifice a weekend of her "self-teaching language studies" ( ) to have a taste of something that has great importance in your life... besides, it's not like you are spending HER money ... like my mom always told me... "Love is Sharing"
