Hey All!

I have a 99 SVT that I just replaced the transmission (spider gears broke) with on that had 40K miles. I put a SPEC 1 clutch and throw-out bearing on. Once I got it put back together, it is leaking transmission fluid out of the bell housing. I pulled the rubber gromet that fills the hole where the hydraulic clutch line comes out and there is some kind of fluid in there. It is suppose to be a dry area. I cannot think of any way the fluid is getting in there as the only path it can take it through the seal on the new throw-out bearing assembly. Any thoughts before I tear this thing apart again?

How does the pressure get released from the tranmission case? Could it be that however that pressure is released isn't working and the path of least resistance is through that seal on the throw-out?

Thanks,
Mike

Did you put RTV on the back of the TOB? If not it'll leak tranny fluid from the back of the TOB to tranny interface.

RTV is a silicone automotive sealant and TOB is throw out bearing.

I did not. This was the first time I had done this and did not read anywhere that I should do that. Will it always leak through there or could there be too much tranny fluid in it?

It looked to me that the TOB assembly just bolted into place and created a tight seal. There is a fluid spot on my driveway about 4" round every time I park it for a while so it appears that it is a decent amount of fluid. Could all that be coming through the seal?

I have replaced that bearing twice without using any sealant because my haynes manual said not to. I have never had any leaks.

Why did you have to replace the TOB twice? How many miles on them?

So the thought is that I should have used some kind of sealant on it? So it is safe to say I have to take this appart again. Dam!

Any other tips while I have it appart? I really don't want to do it for a third time!

What keeps the ATF from entering the clutch housing? Is it the output shaft bearing or the TOB assembly? I took it appart and most of the inside of the clutch housing was wet. It looks like it is coming through the back of the TOB but not 100% sure on that. See picks.

This it the back of the TOB. Should it seal the Output shaft?

Looking at the output shaft bearing, it doesn't look like it seals anything

Well you've got a non-Ford TOB/slave, so I'm not surprised if it ins't machine to spec and hence leaks.

Also the seal is pressed into the back of the slave and seals onto the shaft. Either you don't have said seal because:
a) the POS slave you have didnt have one to start with
b) you knocked it out somehow
c) you damaged the seal installing the slave
or
d) it's a POS seal, just like the slave.
