I never heard of BMW engines being sealed (but I don't claim to know everything).

As for me, I have a 1993 BMW 318i and the engine is definitely NOT sealed. Anyone can change the oil.

At first, I used to take it to the dealer, but at $50-$60 a shot, I changed that fast. And, as far as I know, they didn't put in synthetic. I then started taking it to a third-party BMW service center (which was about $35 a shot). Now I just take it to Walmart (and bring my own filter).

I would do it myself, but it's more trouble than it's worth (especially since Walmart can do it for ~$13).
