I think the only truely sealed engines run on Uranium The last car I had that vented crankcase gasses directly to the atmosphere was my 1966 Chevy Nova. Crankcase gasses are now sent back into the intake for combustion. Heck, even exhaust gas is sent back through the intake to reduce NOx pollutants. TB

Driving habits and once the engine is started driving it at least 10 miles to evaporate water etc. is essential. I go anywahere from 5000 to 12,000 miles between changes but it depends on the car and conditions. Not al cars can go extended drains even with synthetic. By the way, there are rumors out there that the new Mobil 1 formula has fewer ani wear additives and is not as good as the older version. they are looking towards the new requirements post SL oils and more concern fo emissions, mpg and cat dmage then long term wear. This is a great oil site by the way. Pretty much unbiased from what I can see http://theoildrop.server101.com/index.htm

And the BMW's are sealed engines. Only BMW dealerships are supposed to change the oil every 10k. I personally don't get how it's air tight, but that's what was said. Makes sense, that if the engine is airtight, no oil changes are necesary for 10k. I never heard of BMW engines being sealed (but I don't claim to know everything). As for me, I have a 1993 BMW 318i and the engine is definitely NOT sealed. Anyone can change the oil. At first, I used to take it to the dealer, but at $50-$60 a shot, I changed that fast. And, as far as I know, they didn't put in synthetic. I then started taking it to a third-party BMW service center (which was about $35 a shot). Now I just take it to Walmart (and bring my own filter). I would do it myself, but it's more trouble than it's worth (especially since Walmart can do it for ~$13).

My Porsche goes 15,000 miles between oil changes. It's also got 10 quarts of oil, so when it is time to change the oil, it costs a bit extra. My mom's Mercedes has a light that pops on when the computer determines it's time to get the oil changed, depending on driving conditions and such. We got concerned that the light never came and changed it prematurely, but it was unnecessary, considering the way she drives.

The new Super-Syn has an additional anti-wear package that the Tri-Syn did not have. However I have not tested the new oil. The Tri-Syn's results were outstanding. I hope the new formula is better (Especially since the price went up! ) http://www.blackstone-labs.com/body_index.html
