I dont blame them. Some marines joined about 20 years ago, got promoted from their level after 15 years, to recruiter, and finally moved into a civilized life, Maybe near family? And just arnt doing well since people dont wanna join, and being forced to be moved again. They wanna stay. My father being a recruiter, didn't make it well after we moved from NC to IL, since our family is out here, and since not many people wanted to go in, they made him goto CA to go back to what he was previously doing. It's hard, because either a nice house you just got has to be sold, or family has to be apart for awhile. I dont blame them at all...
Just my opinion and personal experiences.

[rant]ya know, stupid threads like this one really irritate me. not all recruiters are bad apples. sure there are some who do some shady things but most of them are just doing a job. don't think for even one second that being a military man means being a lamb. a leader... I've Been In The Beloved Marine Corps For Seven Years Now And Am Awaiting My HONORABLE Discharge Within The Next Year. I Do Agree That The Story Originating This Post (If 100% Accurate) Was Far Out Of Line And Grounds For NJP Under The UCMJ ( Universal Code Of Military Justice ). I Do However Believe Most Of That Story To Be A Bit Farfetched. There Will Always Be Periods Of Balance And Imbalance In Military Recruiting Because The Individuals Sought After For Recruitment Will Be "Leaned On In One Of Three Ways": 1: Full Support From Family And Friends 2: Zero Support From Family And Friends 3: Decision Being Completely Left Up To The Individual
I Have A Hard Time Finding Any Gray Area Where The "Posting Story" Could Be 100% Correct. Although I Will Admit I Could Be Wrong. I Was Fed All Of The Lines When I Walked Into My Recruiters Office In 1997. I Was 17 yrs. Old And Not EVEN Of Legal Age To Sign Myself In!!! I SAt For About Three Hours Listening To The Salespitch From The Recruiter Before I Finally Told Him That I Had Made Up My Mind To Join Weeks Before I Even Met Him...and That It Wasnt Me He Had To Convince, But My Mother Whom Lost Her Brother In Vietnam And My Father Who Served As An 0311 In Vietnam. (0311=Grunt In Tha Corps). Not Everyone Joins The Military To Become A Killer, But The Military Offers Some Of The Most Needed Relief To Families In The U.S. That Have Applicable Skills That Can Serve Our Country To The Fullest; As Well As Give The Servicemember A Foothold In Society Afterward That He/She May Have Never Attained. Whilst Training To Do So, Serving To Make YOUR LIFE EASIER!!! In Short The Military Is Not For Everyone But It Is FOR EVERYONE. The Pressures Recruiters Are Placed Under Are Tremendous As Are The Reasons That The U.S. Employs A Military Force. It Is Supply And Demand At Its Best, And Like It Or Not, Will Always Be That Way. Because It Must Be For YOUR SAKE!!! Sorry For The Rant! SEMPER FI For Those Of You That Dont Know, It Means: ALWAYS FAITHFUL

Yes you are wrong.
I went in with a college degree, instant OCS Candidate. I was guide in bootcamp (leader of the platoon), and after OCS was given a unit to command. Of course, some people can't handle structure in their lives, and cannot realize that the military is simply an over-simplified look at the real world. If you seriously think you can go through the rest of your life without listening to anyone, you are mistaken, and will fail.

some people can be soldiers and others cannot. im a leader, not a follower. you have to be a follower or things just wont work. im glad you have your semper fi pride and what not. that's great. good for you and yours. im sure it works very well for you.
I, too, am a leader, I always have been. The difference is I saw the military as a way to get ahead in life, where-as you saw it as something holding you back. I agree, not everyone can be a Marine -- that's why the slogan is, "The FEW, the PROUD, the MARINES."
I find it funny that the majority of the great leaders in our history were Marines, if not other servicemembers, and yet you think only followers join. A leader has to know how to follow orders, as well, to be able to lead effectively.

while youre bashing me, why dont you bash the other 98% of the people who are on this board for not joining either
I don't bash people for not joining, however I do bash people who have a very narrow, and incorrect view of the Corps, or those who signed up, only to cry their way out of bootcamp.

That sounds an awful lot to me like a classic excuse â?? now rather universally rejected â?? for rape.
You cannot seriously be comparing rape vs pressure to join the military, can you?
Let's see, you said you were pressured, yet in your first post you did exactly what I said -- you told the recruiter that you were planning on a military career later on in life -- that gave him hope. As I said before, recruiters simply do not waste time badgering people who they have no hope of enlisting -- like you seem to believe. And throwing in that a recruiter was going to leave your friend behind is simply stupid. If that did happen, all that kid had to do was make a phone call to the recruiters superior officer -- or even make the threat -- and that would have been the end of that. It's that whole leaders and followers thing that svt4stv was complaining about...

It took a credible threat of criminal prosecution to get him to finally leave me alone.
I've met hundreds of recruiters in my life, and dealt with over 100,000 recruits at MCRD and MEPS -- I've never heard one person say they were pressured into joining. Even the [censored] who were getting out because they couldn't hack it.
Its funny, people seem to think that recruiters are not subject to the UCMJ, especially Article 132, Frauds against the United States. (That's the article that prevents Marines from lying to possible recruits.)

The reasons for this war are not valid and ambiguous.
? ? When Pearl Harbor was attacked, it was clear who was responsible, and what we had to do about it.? It was Japan that attacked us.? The government of Japan, the people of Japan, the entire nation of Japan.? We had a well-defined, obvious enemy, and we had to go to war against that enemy.
? ? We were attacked again on 11 September 2001.? You don't mean to suggest that these attacks were nothing more than a fabrication perpetrated by President Bush, do you?
? ? Surely, the 09/11/2001 attacks are every bit as much an act of war as the attack on Pearl Harbor.? And surely these attacks demand, every bit as much as the Pearl Harbor attack did, that we go to war and seek to destroy those responsible for these attacks.
? ? The only thing that is different is that this time, the enemy is not so clearly defined.? Instead of having a single enemy nation whose government and people were behind the attack, we have a loose group of terrorists who were hidden in? â??? and were covertly supported by the governments of? â??? several nations.? I can't begin to imagine the detective and espionage work that must have been put into identifying our enemies and the nations that supported them.? For obvious reasons, our government cannot share with the public the evidence that it has gathered.? In this situation, we can only hope and trust that our government has identified and targeted the correct enemies.
? ? There is no question that a very good reason exists for us to be at war.? We were attacked, and thousands of us murdered, on our own soil.? The only thing that can be questions is whether we have identified and attacked the correct enemies.
? ? if there is anything that gives me comfort, it is that we have an administration that appears to be honest and trustworthy, as opposed to the administration that preceded it, which repeatedly proved itself to be very much otherwise.

? ? I think my analogy stands up just fine.? I made it as clear as I could that I was not going to join the Army, and I wanted him to leave me alone.? He continued to harass me, in spite of repeated requests and demands that he stop.? Not until I threatened to press charges did he finally leave me alone.
? ? You say that by stating an intend to pursue a military career in the future, in a different branch, I was somehow indicating that I was interested in joining the Army, now, through him?? Haven't I heard it claimed that by wearing a short skirt, and a low-cut top, a woman is expressing interest in sexual intercourse with whomever's eye she happens to catch?? And in both cases, our clearly saying "No!? Leave me the Hell alone!â? doesn't count for anything?? Other than you, is there still anyone in our society who accepts such an excuse?

? ? About this, I only know what my friend told me, filtered through 20+ years of fading memory.? I do know that one way or another, he got out of the contract he was coerced into signing.
? ? I'm not saying that this behavior is typical of military recruiters.? I don't know if it is or not.? ? I do regard military service as an honorable occupation.? Vermin such as this cast shame and dishonor on this noble profession, as you do upon yourself by defending these vermin.
