The reasoning of my assumption is because my brother had recruiting duty during his last year of service. He basically had to lie to people to butter up what the service sounds like. And NO, it's not hell, either. He didn't carry out what the story accuses the recruiters of doing, though. As I said that's.. not being a recruiter. That's being an aszhole.

I got the calls to stop by telling them I was gay.

I have to agree with the other posters here. This kid must have showed some interest. I got calls from Army, Navy and Marine recruiters when I turned 18, and they were really decent and didn't seem pushy. They all asked me what my post grad plans were, and when I said I was going to Miami for Mechanical Engineering they all said, "Good luck with that, the country could use more engineers".
Of course, they then called back and gave me the line about Miami being expensive and that they could help pay for tuition. When I told them I had a 20k a year academic scholarship to Miami, they again said, "Good luck at Miami, we'll be taking you off of our list of people to call".
I haven't got a call since. If you don't show any interest, and are polite about it, they stop calling.

Are you saying that there is only 1 recruiter out there? Hey, every job has someone that really takes things to extremes.
Its certainly a possibility that a couple recruiters went bad. Just because you had a positive experience doesn't mean that everyone will.
Additionally, you had an out. You had a 20K scholarship, so they didn't have much leverage on you. This kid comes from a poor farm where college money is probably a huge incentive. Additionally, recruiters are probably under significantly more pressure now than ever before.

Even if he has shown interest, the story certainly indicates he had told the Marines he had changed his mind about being interested...
While I believe the story was likely sensationalized, this is downright badgering.
The requirement for schools to provide the military with student contact information is yet another rotten part of No Child Left Behind (not that there's any good parts in that UnConstitutional law).

i almost joined the Marines when i was about 20 years old. my father was a staff sgt in the army and i thought it would be good to join the service too. i signed up, got my cousin signed up and we, and a bunch of other potential recruits, were taken down to the MCRD in San Diego (which i heard they may close...). we spent the night there and were woken up at about 5am and had to run our out-of-shape asses off and were yelled out etc... i was like "oh hell no this isnt for me" i was already working full time as a teacher's assistant, paying bills and half way done with college. not to mention, i already spent my first 20 years being yelled at by a "wannabe drill sgt." i knew what i was getting into but didnt really think about it.. i was scared to death of the physical demands and the committment. plus, i had been taking meds for depression. i knew this wasnt going to be for me (no matter how much i would have wanted it to). i had already signed up, sworn in, and got my ship date. well, it was about a month before i was to be "shipped" off when i told the recruiter i had changed my mind. my father had told me that congress(?) had made it so you can back out until you step onto the bus. the head recruiter, who was a really nice guy, took me aside and told me in a calm but serious voice that if didnt get on that bus he would call the school i worked at and tell them i was a child molester and do everything he could to make my life miserable. i got home and told my dad. he wasnt happy as you can imagine. he called and spoke with the head recruiter who denied everything of course. he said the paperwork would go through as soon as he could. my dad called a week later about it and the guy continued to give him the run-around. my dad simply stated, "do i need to have a congressional investigation?" after that, the guy simply said in a shocked voice "no sir, definitely not. the paperwork will be back tomorrow." and that was it. my dad told me that if he were to call his local congressman and demand a congressional investigation it would be hell for those guys. TONS of paperwork to fill out and what not. he said he's seen guys get it in the army and it was a beyotch. anyway, just my lovely little recruiter story. yes, i did flake/chicken out which apparently lose them some recruiter points but that jerk was way out of line.

I have a lot of respect for anyone who joins the military and serves their country. Some people cant get through the first day of basic training so serving in the military and getting an honorable discharge is a big accomplishment. I almost didn't get into the military because of medical problems. The military has high standards.
The parent seems to have a poor attitude for not wanting their son to join the military.

We had a name in the Marines for people like him.

When I joined up I was 130lbs soaking wet, had a college degree, 2 children, and a very promising career in IT. Some people put country before themselves -- these are the people who make good Marines. After reading that "story" -- I'm glad you never served in my Corps.
