woo woo!
glad to hear it was an easy fix!
those 2 things can make a huge difference by adjusting them just a hair.

these are the directions I've found to serve me well (assuming your amp is driving your subs):
-make sure you have the amp crossover set to LPF
-without your subs firing, turn the volume of your head unit to 90% of the loudest you listen to your music (100% would be when your speaks start to clip, not maxing out the head unit)
-turn on your amp(subs) and tune your input level on your amp so that you get a nice crisp punch without any clipping

voila!
now you are getting the most from both your head unit and your amp

I put on what cd had the most bass. This way all the others should be within their limits. I set my LP on my HU to 78 and the HP to the highest. THis is how I did it:
1st. Get away from all the angry neighbors and old farts
2nd. Put in the cd that you like the best (or for bass the bassest cd you have)I set all my sub control and bass control in the middle so I have some leway. Turn the cd player up to about where you would listen to it.
3rd Set your input on your amp so that you get clean sound and no clip
4th Set your LP filter all the way up
5th Tune ur bass boost to w/e you want. I have mine all the way up b/c I like alot of bass.
6th Tune ur HU the way that you want it.
Lemme know if this sounds right.

When you say "turn your LP filter on your h/u all the way up" does that mean make it as low as possible? i think mine goes down to 80hz

you shouldn't really need to do anything with your HU LPF because your f'n awesome rockford amp's should have a crossover built in. so just make sure the filters on your sub amp are cranked down. in fact the only thing you should be using your HU filters for are speakers directly powered by the HU. so if you are using an amp to power your mids/tweets, you should be adjusting the crossover for those speaks on the amp as well.

personally, my HU EQ stays at "neutral" or "through" and adjust the bass level through my bass boost. I have yet to find a case where the EQ is useful other than boosting the midrange while listening to NPR.

as far as your bass boost, i would recommend doing all your tuning with it at 1/2, that way you can get a boost out of your rock and a safe zone for your thumpy music. (I hardly ever have to turn up my bass boost becuase of the way my stereo is tuned, but i can go either way if neccessary)
