Yea Pud, if you do that, get ahold of me. Even if you don't and you wouldn't mind doing a 1-off project. I'm using the famous rubbermaid right now, which I'm not too fond of. It works but is pretty ugly.

I would! me like  ...I'd even consider just buying templates and do the actual metalwork myself.

Im looking into it, already made a phone call.
Just need to get the design into CAD and have a friends dad laser cut them. do a couple of test ones and make sure everything fits close together

something made of material that deflects the heat away from the filter works best as in the pics above (aluminium, reflectix etc, a mesh with aluminized content). conductive heat transfer is not an issue in automotive applications as it does not affect the intake temp (studies show this...also many after market intakes are made of metal) so...make one out of aluminium if possible. when it comes down to it though, getting colder air into the filter whether it is stock or not is more important than shielding the filter itself.
To give you an idea of how well aluminium works as a heat deflector. I used to have fuel boiling in the carbs of my summer car after hard driving. They were too hot to touch even for a second or two as you can imagine.
I fabricated a heat shield out of aluminium and wrapped it just below the 3 carbs, separating the carbs from the headers with the aluminium. Now after running the car hard, in hot weather I can leave my hand on them, totally cool to the touch.

You mention mesh ... like the heat shielding used on heavy machinery, and rigs and so forth ? I wondered about that sort of application before.

yeah, kind of like the stuff used on firewalls and on hvac applications etc. I did some research on the web and there are quite a few people who have used a material called 'reflectex'. It comes in a roll and you can get it at home depot. Some are using it for firewall etc. As long as it is not directly exposed to a heat source (ie exhaust) it is fine for shielding a filter box. It is supposed to deflect 97% of the heat, according to the company. Same material is used to make sun shades for cars...
