Hmmm...

I think I wouldn't even bother buying the rods separately at those prices.

He already has a block ... what good would another do? He needs rods and "newer is better" according to him. So, why not get brand new since they are over half the cost of the rods he really should be getting.

Why do you need '01 rods?
I have 6 99 rods that were already used in a turbo motor and have had no issues.

For Y2K:

When you crack a stock rod on a tuned motor, I'll look at the specs, THEN I may decide to buy forged. For now, I'll keep my 330 ft-lbs PROVEN rods in my car, turbo'd for two years now.

I should have been a bit more clear. I'm assuming he's going for more than 330FWHP/TQ. That's definitely nothing to snarl at, but it just seems that everyone is trying to top the next guy. Take Jim's car for example. He plans on having Jerry do some more tuning for high boost. He's already hit 410FWTQ, and I'd be damned if I were shooting for those kinda #'s and not putting forged internals(rods in this case) in my motor. I agree, for a fully tuned motor, not running crazy amounts of boost, he'd be fine with stock rods. But as has been said already, he's going to be paying ~$300-400 for stock rods, why not go the extra distance and go forged? Wouldn't you consider that like rebuilding your transmission and buying a stock diff?

How many miles do you have on this motor now Tom?

Probably 10K with one cross-country drive.

About 15 runs down the drag strip on it too.

You're right, 330 tq is nothing to sneeze at especially when you consider that holding this level of torque to 6500 rpm will net you 408 wHP

No one has beat this (408HP) number yet even with their forged components right?
Hell, two and a half years ago they were saying the rods were brittle and would shatter like a champaign glass when 300 HP was hit. That was when Keyser's car was pulling 270 HP.
Then I came along with the same rods and pulled the first cool 300 HP on 91 octane pump gas and stock bottom end!

Then I topped myself again by pulling over 300 ft-lbs.

So I'm not convinced yet.

If it were me, I'd put my money on pistons and tuning.

Nobody has broken the 408whp mark..... yet. I think Jim will definitely be there after his next tune. Looking at his dyno graph from when they backed off at 4700 rpms, his HP would have definitely crossed the 400 mark had they stayed in it, it's just a matter of how far over the 400 line.
