Do you want to be slapped by bringing up the Phantom Grip?

Just thought I'd bring it up for a reason: it works! Well, Phantom grip does work - a little. It's not great for the diff, it doesn't perform as well a Torsen or Quaife, and it doesn't work to replace a blown diff or strengthen the stock diff. It's not worth the money, don't think I'm a proponent, but previous threads were too harsh: it is a real LSD when you are done, but it's effectively a cheap clutch-type, not a great Torsen.

The phantom might be a viable option for some of the zetec Tours and focus's. As long as there not pushing much more than stock hp. they shouldnt worry to much about blowing the stock diff. I could be wrong though.

It's a Piece of sh!t and it does NOT strengthen the diff, which is what you need. In fact that POS allows MORE torque to be put through ONE stock spider gear, therefore increasing the chance that you'll break the diff.

Get it through your heads. The Phantom is JUNK, JUNK, JUNK!

Yeah, but mostly because our (yours, but not mine, so much) stock diff is junk. It DOES WORK, it's just a very bad decision for our car. I think previous posts indicated it didn't work.

The only differentials that lock the wheels together when you try to hand turn them are ones that are preloaded, either with an interference fit in the clutch packs or with coil springs. However, helical diffs normally don't fall into this catagory. The Phantom Grip provides the spring preload. Unfortunately, it doesn't give the differential any clutches that the springs normally compress in a typical LSD, so the effectiveness of is, um, sort of a Phantom...

That may not be right, but I do remember there was definately a difference because I wanted to be sure the tranny I was about to put in really had the quiafe, it was the only way I could tell without driving it.

lol, I guess that probably doesnt help you at all

You are correct! The torsen also has a plate with a very small hole in the center of it that you can see where the axles go through. THe stock diff is open all the way through with the size of the axle shaft.

I'm confused, one person said this is the stock diff, but it isn't open all the way through, so is this a quaife then?

no. the big rod going through the middle is part of the spider gears of the stock diff!

Well, I guess I'm using piss poor terminology! The stock diff is open....other than that huge pin for the spiders.
I mainly mean that it doesn't have the plate in the middle like the lsd.
