I'm almost POSITIVE the insurance company has seen the car. Any "decent" insurance angent will look the car over with a claim, the owner, and the body shop. I'm sure they have pics and know just as much info as Nitro does.
Have you SIMPLY stated you DO NOT want teh car fixxed and that it WILL NOT be the same?! Just simply stating this will usually work. Do you owe money on the car? Even more reason to total it. No use paying for a car that will rattle, squeak, track funny, and not run like it did.
