I don't think so, I've gone by cops (city cops and state patrol) 5 over didn't even budge. My dad goes at least 5mph over the limit on highways most of the time.
I was actually following a cop going 5 over the limit before, city tho.

Here in Atlanta there are no speed limits.

There are signs, but they don't really hold any authority. I regularly drive by, next to, behind, in front of cops doing 20-30 over the posted speed limit, as does the rest of the trafffic.

Alex is completely right. Any statistic regarding accidents needs to be normalized by million miles driven or by number of times passed (if a fixed location) for it to have any meaning.

I did a research paper/project on speeding in relation to traffic deaths. In general over the past 40 years, speeds have been rising, there are more and more drivers on the road and deaths have been falling.

Go look at the statistical abstract, it has some good data in it.

Speed limit has nothing to do w/ anything. It is exaclty what it is: a limit on speed. Therefore, you shouldn't exceed the speed posted. The actual speed you drive is up to the descretion of the driver. It depends on conditions... 65mph only if there is light traffic, good weather, dry pavement, and during the afternoon on a clear day. But the problem is, people are sheep, and will drive the same speed as everyone else. Every time you are on an interstate, you see people driving 85 in heavy rain at night. Cops choose to pull over people only for higher speeds, since a 3 mph over ticket will get dimissied in court, and is a waste of everyone's time.

The answer to everything, instead of lowering or raising speed limits, is to teach people how to drive right for condtitons. DMV does a crappy job, as mentioned above... things like high speed emergencies, tire blowouts, and gaining control on a slippery road should be taught instead of parrael parking and 3 point turns.

If you do some research on Speed Camera's and their true 'safety' you will find plenty of little articles about how statistics are skewed for changes in speed limits.

One example is ...

on average a road has 100 accidents per year and 10 fatalities
speed limits decreased from 60mph to 40mph in say 1999

in 1997 there were 200 accidents ... this would be an abnormally high figure, average is 100 remember
in 1998 the fatalies increased to 35 (say a bus crashed)
in 2000 the road was closed for 3 months for resurfacing and replacing vandalised speed cameras so accidents dropped to 50 and no fatalities

in this example the 'anti-speed' grandma lobby will say something like.

When the speed limit was dropped from 60 to 40 in 1999 collisions reduced from 200 in 1997 to 50 in 2000. Fatalities were reduced from 35 per year in 1998 to none in 2000! ....blah blah blah

In other words ... statistics used out of context are BS

However, the reasoning behind that speed limit and why that number is chosen should be a matter for public debate an consideration.

This is true I was following an Audi doing 30 over in the carpool lane and passed a cop, I could almost swear he waved. The only time I have ever been pulled over in GA was for noise ordinance violations, never go a ticket though. In AL I have been pulled over several times and the troopers here will tell you that they give you 7 MPH. I've had 2 tickets one was unfair 65 in a 35. The other was 113 in a 55, I deserved that ticket b/c I had gotton a little carried away on a wide open stretch of highway. The point is that I have never had an accident, Other than a couple of deers I took out. People you are all right in the fact that speed doesn't kill its the people that don't know how to drive and panic everytime a squirrel crosses the pavement, like my wife! I'm not knocking women drivers either. The DMV is not gonna spend much needed time actually teaching these kids how to drive, they would much rather hand out tickets and pick them up off the street to keep their money coming in.
When I was growing up my dad would go out and buy any old POS he could find, drag it home and me ,my brother, and my sister would get it running, with some help, and we drove it till the wheels fell off. If you cut an 8,9,& 12 year old loose in a car on this long dirt road, they'll learn how to drive!
When my kids get older I plan on taking them up to the country and showing them how to really drive, If you cut them loose and let them get all of that out of their system, you'll have a much safer driver. JMO!

Atlanta has no speed limit, rest of georgia does. I've gotten an 18 over (dismissed) and a 30 over which was I was innocent of but it sorta disappeared I think in south georgia.
