You are wrong.
When you are coasting in gear the PCM shuts off the injectors in series. You are basically getting free mileage for no real fuel spent. The exhaust will be flat out lean. Engine braking (extreme vacuum) is by far the most efficient state an engine can be run in.
When you coast in neutral the PCM tries to idle up the engine and it also runs very rich.
Not only that but coasting out of gear is illegal and can be dangerous. The car is much more likely to stall. (no power steering or brakes) Especially if you have to use the brakes which are powered by engine vacuum. Panic stops are not good when coasting in neutral because the sudden drop in manifold vacuum will probably stall the engine!
