Alrighty, as some of you know my 3L Hybrid has started having issues and I've only got a few thousand miles on it. as some of you may also remember, I'm a broke college student that before this happened, was concidering selling the 'tour in order to pay for school as opposed to taking out more loans. I'm definately in need of some SERIOUS input and opinions on this matter; I'm really stressed (since I really don't have much in the way of funds) and kinda pissed that I even have to be weighing these options right now.

Your poll mentions something about a beater ... can you just park the SVT until you can find more cash and drive that around? I know a few people who are doing that right now ...

Techically, yes I could. However, unless I have an unknown and very wealthy realative that suddenly dies and leaves me a fortune, or I win the lottery, my it'll be sometime after graduation and finding a decent job that I have any decent income. (Graduate April of '06) The other side of the coin is that the introduction of loan money only stands as a possibility for a few more weeks, as I have no avaliable co-signer, and won't be independantly able to get additional loans soon.
I'm sure my dilema is apparant.

If you're going to do it, do it right. This may not mean the $10,000 option. However, if you go into debt to fix up the car, go into debt enough to completely fix it up so you can reasonably expect substantial trouble-free life from the car.
If you can only justify putting a bandage on the issue, better to store it and wait (a couple years even will go by much faster than you think...) or to sell it.

.....i'm with the "chic" on this one...i've considered similar things in the past..in my eyes you have to options..do it right, get rid of it,or park it..and park it and get rid of it seem to be out of the question..if you get rid of it you have no money for another car,or atleast a reliable one...keep it get the 3l done right...without the turbo...awwwwwww f-it get the turbo too...

If you can fix the motor somewhat cheap, I would do that, and then sell the car. Either way I think the car should be sold, it is a loosing propisition financially, and do you really need 2 cars for 1 person while you are in college? As you pointed out you don't have loads of money lying around, and that seems a tad excessive, if you can't afford it.
I know my opinion will be in the minority on a car enthusiast board, but it just doesn't seem like what your doing is making any sense financially.

it is, and technically the beater is supposed to be up for sale right now, but minor little set backs here and there, and now this big set back keep giving me cause to drive it again.
I tend to agree that I should try to get the car fixed as cheaply as possible and then sell it, but with the state of the body (not terrible, bumpers need paint, dent on left quarter, surface rust starting on lower seam of inner door, and a few minor other knicks and bumps) I'm not sure if I can sell it and get a reasonable percentage of my money out of it.
However, I'm also looking at the idea that if I get it fixed up and running good, any loan money I put into it will simply equate to a car payment when it comes time to pay on it, and if I continue to own and enjoy the car it's like buying with a loan, only instead of a short term high interest car loan it'll be on a long term low interest student loan.
I'm definately torn as to what I should do.

I've been building cars for 30 years, wich means that I've blown alot of money that should of been spent other places. Do not let it consume you. If you can not afford it, get rid of it. Down the road after school and you are working and have your loans paid off and your other finacial comitments are met buy another SVT, you will be happier in the long run.

looks like the issues may not actually be issues, just low milage bugs,
but anyway I think I'm selling the car anyway, I spend too much time playing with the car instead of studying, and I really need to divert my attention to the proper places.
