Humans have three basic dimensions: psychological, biological, and spiritual (aka mind, body, spirit). Sex and sexual relationships are the only activities that involve all three at the same time. The physical nature is simple, the psychological a little more complex. The spiritual aspect of sex is something humans have been trying to figure out and actually struggling with for their entire existence. By 'spiritual' I don't necessarily mean religious, though the spiritual often manifests itself in religion. In other words, being religious is not a requisite for being spiritual.
Those who do not understand and do not attempt to fulfill the different human dimensions of sex are missing out on its true beauty and purpose. Many don't understand how unique our sexual existence is within the animal kingdom, and reduce it to a simple biological act (like Darwinists are inclined to do).
