Well I would not be caught dead in any church that teaches contrary to what the Bible says. And if a church taught how to explore with a partner who is not your spouse they would be doing just that.
After having gone through a divorce, divorce is not a religious act, it's a civil act.
There was nothing my church could do to stop my divorce, or to keep our family together. I did the hard work too, owned what I did wrong and vowed to correct my short comings.
Yet the laws are written so that if one partner gets unhappy, they can unilaterally decide to end the marriage.
Infidelity plays no part in most child custody decisions or alimony decisions. Our society has decided that "no-fault" divorce is ok.
I have yet to attend a church that says it's for "no-fault" divorce. So I have a hard time putting much of the blame on our current divorce statistics on the church. If I recall, the church (both Catholic and most if not all protestant demoniations are against "no-fault" divorce.
I was willing to do what it took to save my marriage. My wife was unwilling to end her affair and stop the divorce she started. Many (maybe most) are due to one or both parties exercising some level of selfishness. No church can, nor should it force behavior as we are all given free will.
However, I cannot see blaming the church for divorce, few churches tell people to get divorces, certainly they don't tell wives to divorce husbands who are faithful, working and non-abusive.
Ok, I'm rambling and have to go back and read more on this thread.
FWIW, I did NOT have pre-marital sex with my wife before marriage. Neither of us were virgins, but we didn't have sex until marriage. That didn't ensure a happy and healthy marriage.
