To put my .02 in for the original question - I find that there's much more hipocracy than there is rule-following. I know hardcore christians who said no pre-marital, but once they got engaged they couldn't keep their clothes on.

Ya know what? It's only natural to desire sex. One must also realize that people who are having sex before marriage are not simply shagging anything with 2 legs; there are many monogomous relationships in which the two have sex with eachother and eachother only. I don't see that as a bad thing.

Also, it'd be pretty damn disappointing to have that wedding night romp be a total dud.

but if you wait til you are married, and don't cheat, you won't know it's a dud.

First off let me say I was raised roman catholic. I have a good friend who has a masters in theology and is a retired southern baptist minister. He is 75 and I'm 41 so there is a huge age difference also. We talk about this all the time and it's his (and my) opinion that if catholic priest's where allowed to marry you would not have as many instances of catholic priests molesting young boys. There are bad points to most religions, problem is nobody wants to address them.

premarital sex was made a sin so that society wouldn't drive itself into the ground from the possible negative consequences, like STDs and unplanned children. generally it's easier to scare people with eternal damnation than to educate them, to consider the long-term consequences of a given action, don't you think...

sex was created by God to be a pleasing thing. The catholic tradition is exactly that; a tradition that THEY, NOT GOD started, saying that sex was for procreation. Anyone who has a bible in their house should open it up to the the Song of Solomon. This whole book is a dialog between Solomon and his wife. They go back and forth about how great and PLEASURABLE sex is and their bodies are. Sex is an awesome thing. God made it for marriage and between a man and a woman. God told us that the pattern of the world (sex promoting, bikini contests, porn, etc..)would be contradictory to this belief and it is. BUT sex as a sin is just like murder, theft, lying, cheating... IT's the moral principles that apply across the board. If you don't want to live up to them, that's fine, I won't like you any less. If you do, congrats I won't like you more, and either way God loves us the SAME.

HEBREWS 13:4 Honor marriage, and guard the sacredness of sexual intimacy between wife and husband. God draws a firm line against casual and illicit sex.

iirc the tradition was started with the new testament, the same time hell was invented. evidently death from above as described in the old testament wasn't enough to scare people anymore? or maybe they figured out death (like sex) is just a part of life and nothing to be afraid or ashamed of.
