I can confirm it.. 40K might be a bit early, but 60-90K is the norm. And if you plan on modding it, it's even dicier.

How about a 1980 280ZX? Cheap parts, 1/4 in 14.1s stock, light, cheap to buy.

A 951 was most likely imported... they look a whole lot like a 944, and they basically are. Kinda like the 996 is a 911. The 951 was the continuation of the 944 but I was under the assumption that it wasn't brought to the North American continent by Porsche....

You may want to check the VR4's...If I recall correctly, they were really short on performance for the buck. That's one of the reasons they're no longer around. They were super-heavy and only because of the 4 wheel drive were they stand-outs. How much are Stealth Twin Turbos going for...if ya can find any...?

You can do an awful lot with $14K. What about an MR2-turbo? Those were pocket-rockets. Or, get an older vette or camaro, tub it, then throw in a 383 Stroker or 502 big block. There's a LOT that can be done with 14 big ones. All depends on what you want in terms of car. Top speed, handling, drag, auto-x, etc...

I know that you can pick up '80 vette's (like mine)in the low $10K range with power everything and decent paint. The extra $4K can buy a lot of engine and other go-fast goodies.


I love my Contour to death, but my 'vette is still my #1 baby.
There's money to be made in racing. I should know. I put a lot of it there.

finding an MR2 around here is almost impossible, and the 300ZX's are way over priced, I haven't driven a VR4 so I wouldn't know about the performnace I just read they were a 14.0 - 13.8 car out of the box and I was impressed. Guess I'll keep investigating and see what comes my way

Uh, no.

In addition to the NA model 944, Porsche also manu'd a Turbo version, sometimes referred to as a 951 but never in any sort of official manner. Similarly the 924 Turbo was termed the 931. The 944 Turbo (951) produced 217 horsepower in '86-'88, and 247 in '89-'90 (IIRC). Weight is 2758 and power is easily increased. A total of 14,235 made it to North America. The '90 model year is the most exclusive as only 144 made it to the U.S.

I like the car, and you can't beat the money to step into a Porsche. That being said, it is underpowered by today's standards--which is easliy fixed though perhaps not as cheap as the other autos you listed. At $5900 and 78k, I'd be very suspicious.

My stepfather is the only person I have known with a reliable RX-7. Don't get me wrong, I wanted the car bad when I was younger but they tend to have their share of engine problems (as previously mentioned).

Someone mentioned a dodge stealth r/t turbo. Same thing as a 3000gt vr-4, just cheaper.

For the money you are looking to spend there are lots of options, if you don't like working on a car, or want to funnel money into it there are certain ones you should avoid, it all depends on what you are after.

You could always get a used volvo 240 and drop a big-block in it laugh
