The clip holds the pad in place.. i was skeptical, but it ensures proper wear on the rotors and pads. If you are having problems getting them off, try pb blaster, then heat... oh dont forget a handy hammer. I have never heard of them having to be cut off. Get a new clip however, i guess from ford.
