It's too bad that good tuners for mobile products are almost impossible to find. I find it sad that 128kbps is better than most peoples FM reception.

I agree. You also have to ask the question where are you when you notice bad performance. I have noticed with my XM that if the signal strength is low the compression is higher on the music. They of course do this to help with bandwidth... I would say that encoding seems to hit around 96 to 128Kbps...but it is not unusual for me to notice that the quality increases on open roads with very few trees around and decreases the more congested the area gets.... I also on a side note, think that I am going over to Sirius sometime soon. Why you ask? Well after having XM from the time it came out to now and listening to Sirius on Dish Network, seems their playlists are much better than XM. XM keeps playing bands I have rarely heard of on some of the channels I am listening to.

Really? I don't think they change the encoding on the fly...i mean, all that music has to be encoded before it's beamed up to the satellite and back down to your car.
