Sounds like a loose ground connection under the dash. Could be a loose bolt at a common ground point. Its not a short or a fuse would blow.

He told me that the wire harness has issues on these cars and that I should talk with Mercury and complain even though it's over 107K miles.

Sad news... It was working fine but stopped working again.
