Well, my biggest problem is budget. I do want exactly those bikes, but they run in the 2k to 3k range, and seeing as how I'm a college student paying for everything, I don't have too much extra money. I'm looking mainly in the 1k and under range, which if I want a sport/street bike, focuses me at the mid 80's-early 90's vintage sport bikes, which from what I've found is hard to find a 500cc and under bike. If anyone has any suggestions in that price range/cc range, I would certainly be open to them!

There's a TON of old 500's and 750's in that price range, and remember those old 80's bike make HALF the horse power oof similarly sized bike today, so I don't think you would be overwhelmed by a bigger, yet older, bike.

Ah, didn't even think about that. I was simply taking suggestions of starting on lighter/smaller new sport bikes and applying that to older bikes. Good call there. Now there's just the matter of finding one. I've found in CO, you don't see much other than Harley's and newer 599cc's and up Sportbikes. Which lends me to eBay, which I don't entirely want to buy my bike from, but due to a lack of options, I will end up doing so. Any other good bike purchasing resources?

Motorcycle Trader Magazine. And eBay isn't bad. I have 3 friends who bought there bikes from there and the bikes where in great condition. They looked at bikes that were close by so they could go check them out in person.

If you're buying 250s or whatever, it won't be as much of an issue, otherwise... MAKE SURE TO GET AN INSURANCE QUOTE FIRST!!! You will find the insurance costs bordering on obnoxious for certain makes. Thank the squids

Here is a suggestion for a cool older bike for you to look for . It's not my first bike , but will be a cool bike for me to ride while I'm in "bike limbo" .

BTW - I started out on a '80 Kawasaki LTD440 . Easy to ride , light & very forgiving . Plus , cheap as heck !

I wouldn't get a bike on a college campus. Drunks like to tip them over, and they get left out in the rain for extended periods of time.

Never heard of anyone at college I went to having that happen. Only bad things that happened is a crew of thiefs came through once and snagged a few suzukis, and a storm knocked over a few. His college sounds like even less of a typical college, so drunks probably will figure it to the equation even less for him.

I go to a 2300 person school in an 8000 person town, the picture perfect model of a safe, crime-free campus... and I've seen 2 motorcycles knocked over... at a campus where only 4 or 5 students have them.

If you're just looking for an around-town beater, it's tough to beat the late-70's/early-80's Honda CX500/CX650. Bulletproof drivetrain (they are still the favorite bike of the London motorcycle messengers, which should tell you something), and dirt cheap to buy and maintain. Plus the standard seating position is great for around-town maneuverability. The one minor drawback for a novice is that the bike was engineered to be a little top-heavy, but that's not a big deal IMO.

Of course, I'm a little biased
