Eclipse GSX. All wheel drive and *shouldn't* be too expensive. Mitsubishi VR4 is AWD, too. Don't forget the WRX - AWD. It's a good happy medium between getting the most out of the car in reliability and functionality, and ease of modification.
I'm actually toying with the idea of picking up a 240sx beater and throwing a Silvia engine into it. Should be cheap the way Sport Compact Car is hyping it.
By the way, you should check out the 3000GT Spyder, twin turbo hard top convertible. Yowza!!
