Those that are interested in the sunroof gear project, here is an update... I should have a test sample in my hands in about two weeks. The molds are cut and are getting their final tooling. The gears will be made out of Delrin which is much harder than the OEM. I will mail out a couple of these to the folks that lent me their gears and they can test them for a week or two. I will be looking for honest critiques (sp?) Don't hold back. I can't do things right if you don't tell me what you really think. If all goes well, I will make an initial run of the gears and be ready to offer them to all who would like them. I am still targeting $65/gear. If you want to buy 10 of them, that is still the price. As you all know this was not an easy project and I have been working on it for about two years. You can try me but this one I will not bend. Just to let you know, the molds for this one are running in the $15K range. This is just the metal to make the gears. This doesn't include the machine and the rest of the support it takes to turn them out. I will post again when I am ready to take orders. Please don't email me yet. I already have the three people I will be sending the gears to. Thanks all Jeff Caplan Odometer Gears LTD 757-593-3478 Odometer Gears LTD

AWESOME JEFF!! I was starting to wonder if my lonely sunroof motor that you have was being held hostage. Can't wait to get it back and critique the hell out of it. Good work my friend, there's been SEVEAL people PM ing asking if I was the one getting this done... which of course it's not, but be prepared for a SLEW or people.

Talk about good timing. My moonroof just stuck open/up about half an hour ago & I've been digging around for info about it. Hopefully they'll be ready sooner than later as it's been damn rainy here in MD lately & I'd rather not have my moonroof stuck open/up.
On a related side note: mine isn't making any noise at all when I hit the button. Through research I wasn't able to determine if this was the gear stripped or some other issue. Anybody have an idea?

Gear is stripped. Mine did the same. You can close it by taking the upper console off, taking the motor off (3 screws) and cranking it shut via the brass colored spline gear sticking out of the roof with a pair of pliers (put some tape or a thin rag over the metal gear so you don't hurt it).

Two things that I noticed:
1) one of the plastic female connection parts was cracked when I got the motor from you. Did you notice? I am hoping. It looked like it cracked when you were disconnecting one of the two connectors.
2) Make sure you reassemble the gear and the microswitch back in the correct position. My machinist and I took it a part several times and I really couldn't tell you if it's correct or not.
The next update, I will post on here again. I will make an initial run of 500 parts. It's not worth turning on for less.
Thanks all
Jeff

Well lucky me I went out to the car later in the evening after the sun went down and it cooled off and sure enough mine shut just fine. Worked 100% fine the rest of the night too. I came across a few posts during my search yesterday that mentioned the same situation. I'm guessing some metal parts in there heated up enough to expand and bind the works up. It's closed now and since it's supposed to rain here again this weekend it'll stay that way. Oh well, anyway glad the gear is coming anyway as it seems to be an inevitable failure anyway.

Hey Jeff.
I was just wondering if my gear was able to be used, as well. I didn't know where things stood until now, but I would love to find out that you could use my gear!

Ray,
You are on my list to send the test samples to. That is if I have enough. I am never sure what will happen the first time I run a new mold. Sometimes I can crank them out. Other times, the part sticks in the mold base and I have to pull it completely a part. This involves about an hour or two of downtime taking everything a part. For those that don't know, all of the metal that goes into this is made up of 200 lbs of steel broken into about 5-6 plates. Lots of bolts that hold everything in, ejection pins, slides and lots of other stuff I can't explain.
I will let you all know when they are in hand.

Yes, I belive it had a small hairline crack on one side.. no big dealk, connector still goes in there. Ford taken it apart MULTIPLE times and I believe they are the fuggers that messed it up.

I'm a little confused from what you are saying, here. I can put it back together as long as all the parts are still with it.. and not broken or forced back together.

I think he's just talking about the cylinder with the cams/lobes on it...it breaks the circuit...it's how the motor knows when to stop. To get it aligned properly, you can hold the motor in your hand (not attached to the roof) and work the switch to see where the positions are...there's longer running time between the back to closed postion than between the closed to vented postion...
