Actually, to check the teeth of the flywheel, its quite painless and free. Take off the passenger tire and inner splash guard. There's a rubber covered access hole at the bottom of the engine/trans housing, you can inspect the flywheel teeth. The inner splash guard has to come off so you can use a socket to rotate the flywheel nice and slowly.
Mine was FUBAR, so fixing it... whole lotta dollars!
