I figured I'd throw this out to the fun and sane bunch here

I found out a good friend got dinged with a ticket for having a tinted plate cover. My guess is he probably was going a bit fast and the officer couldn't get a reading...so they went for the plate cover. It's a $110 ticket with no points.

I know that plates have to be visible, but on what criteria for the covers? I've often heard that all covers are technically illegal because they can block the view of the plate.

I can't see the clear ones being illegal? mine are 100% visible

It's up to the officer's discretion. I used to have the smoked plate covers on my old SE, and two times, with my wife (soon to be former) was driving my SE, she was pulled over. Officer said that she (and he on other occasion) could not see the plates from across the intersection. Both occasions were in Peel Region, once by Square One, other occasion by Peel Regional Police Headquarters.

I then removed the smoked covers and replaced with clear ones.

BTW, she was pulled over due to having a non factory exhaust system and Xenon headlight bulbs (both times), lucky for her, the ownership was in my name.
