Looks like it's now "no" for importing Mondeos for Mercury. Well, after this car wears out, I will look over the Mazda 6's and the Ford 500. No Taurus for me.
Clips from Automotive News:
"Rethinking Mondeo"
"Mercury's lineup will use Ford and possibly Mazda platforms. The automaker has switched gears regarding the Mondeo, Ford of Europe's front-wheel-drive sedan that was being considered for Mercury as recently as last month."
"Importing the Mondeo could trigger problems with the UAW because Ford is expected to close several North American plants, industry sources say"
2000 SE fleet, V6, ATX, ABS, no spoiler, T-Green/tan. Built 01/2000 in MO. Added 12 spoke factory SE rims, K&N. Biggest mod: ESP Plan!

That Mazda 6 is a beautiful little car. Saw it at the Dallas Auto Show. I would, if it rides and drives like the Contour, buy it in a heartbeat.

Sometime in 2005 Ford will introduce a car to slot in above the Taurus called the 500. It is designed to compete with more upscale sedans such as the volkswagen Passat. It's front end looks very much like the 2001 Mondeo. It is to be based on the new Ford SUV, the Crosstrainer. The 500 will come with your choice of a 6 speed automatic, or a continously variable tranny.
FYI

What kind of problem with the UAW would that be?

UAW would want Ford to keep a closing plant in the USA open if they were to decide to sell Mondeos. Instead they will make new sedans at the Mazda plant in Flat Rock and the 500 in Chicago.

FYI Where did you get your information about this car? The 500 will not be built on the mazda 6 platform. I can`t say yet what platform they are using.

The '500' and the 'Cross Trainer' are supposed to be an "all new" platform.
I wouldn't say the '500' is a "Contour successor". It's going to be bigger than a Taurus and will be in the mid 20,000 range.
But, at least Ford is doing it right keeping the Taurus around for fleets, so the '500' can stand on its own.
