I have a trunk rack that actually lays on top of my trunk and carries the bike's like a roof rack. If you mount it with all the straps on the lid of the trunk, it doesn't restrict access to any part of the car (other than I have to life an extra 24.5lbs to get the lid up) and it's got foam rubber pads at all contact points. It never left a mark on the last car, and so far I've seen none on this one. I still don't like lifting the bike over the car, and I definately don't want to put a hitch on my Tour...
