There significant differences between socialism and the old Communist Russia. Remember, Russia was Communist not socialist - no matter what they are trying to teach now.

There are many more differences between socialism and our federal Republic. The proposed EU constitution would try to bring the European countries into similar federal republic - but a very socialist-leaning one.

As to the loan situation, that is good news. Hopefully you can learn what you need to get a good job when you graduate - so you can pay them off more quickly! I'm almost done paying mine off.

Oh I know Russia was communist but people mix Communism and Socialism and they have become buzz words for everything America is not. There is a capitalist economy here, people seem to forget that. They do have a large social state though and that is where the US and Europe differs the greatest.

As for my studies, they will not be done for around 6 years. I still have to finish my BA and then I want to finish with a doctored, I will have massive loans unless I find a doc program that pays; there are a few.

Who will be their closest political ally if the EU becomes politically unified? Which country has the largest population, the most rapidly-growing economy, and the single-largest, most politcally repressive government? And finally, which country is soaking up so many world-wide resources that it is economically stifling the rest of the world? A hint: the name is one word - no acronyms.

I can't see any of this panning out to any great extent. European Socialism is quite a bit different from Chinese Communism. As you say, the Chinese government is repressive; EU member nations represent a large portion of the political spectrum. Not sure why all these ideologies would be willing to change to match China's.

In addition, China's economy is essentially capitalist. It's not like their economic goals are diametrically opposed to ours.

We need to continue to develop strategies for dealing economically with both China and the EU. But I'm not worried about any cold war-style ideological battle.
