Because protection of Europe was in our best interests doesn't mean we didn't protect Europe. Without our nuclear umbrella, it is most likely the USSR would have attempted to take over Europe conventionally. Our nuclear superiority balanced out their conventional superiority. If they objected to this, they are fools.
