Had the same problem. I ended up putting a zip tie around the cable and the shifter as a temporary fix. It got me by until I got the new shift cable installed. You could probably be creative and weld something to the end of the ball on your shifter, that would block the linkage from coming off, but if you're going to go through all that trouble, you might as well do it right and replace the cables.
