Your pads aren't hanging over the edge of the rotor. The full pad has contact with the rotor, the pads actually sit inside the edge of the rotor. That ridge you fell is just rust from were the pad doesn't touch. Heat on rotors makes them rust like crazy, there is nothing you can do about it.
