My son's(new to him) 96 Contour is giving me fits... First was a CEL that signaled a dirty fuel filter. I pay for a new filter and a fuel injection service. $192. Two days later the CEL is back on with what was to be determined a dirty MAF sensor. Midas cleans it. Normal part to "clean"? Anyway that very night the engine stalls 3 times in traffic after pulling away from a stop light and twice moments after starting the engine and attempting to drive off... Hmmmm pattern? The car just stops as if you turned off the key.. Quickly putting in neutral and restarting the engine works everytime but this is dangerous! What can this be? Unless it just coincidence its gotta be what Midas did or didn't do right. TIA_ Fred

How did they clean it ?
What did they use for the chemical ?
The MAF wires are delicate and can easily be ruined by rough cleaning techniques.

Yes...thats the plan... never go back. As to what was used to clean the MAF sensor, I don't know. In hindsite I should of. Regardless could damage here cause my son's car symptoms? It just quits. No studdering or appearance of fuel starvation. Can an indication of no fuel or air tell the computer to just shutdown, and after quickly restarting the engine "reset" whatever and all is well for a while.. _Fred

Unplug the MAF and start the car.
Let the car run as the computer will make up for the MAF missing.
While the engine in running (if it runs), plug the MAF back in.
The car should stutter when doing this (pluggin in the MAF), but it should figure it out pretty quick and stay running.
If nothing happens or stalls then the MAF might be fubar.
Clean it with electronics cleaner or some say brake cleaner and try it again.
Do the symptoms happen when the engine is cold, hot or both?
I had a similar problem when engine is hot and it turned out to be the fuel pump.

Check your oil level.
I had a problem like this once before. After cleaning every wire connection and adding oil it went away.
May have just been a short?

So far the symptoms have occurred when the engine has been warm or hot. When my son has left for school in the morning or again after school the car has been fine. In fairness to Midas the possibility of the fuelpump was brought up when the car's original problem with the CEL being on was diagnosed to turn out to be a dirty fuel filter causing low fuel preasure. I take it the fuelpump is inside the tank as with a lot of cars?. Wouldn't the car just studder to a halt if the fuelpump shutdown or would the computer just say "stop..no fuel...no go". As I mentioned above the car just stops as if you shut the key off. _Fred

Here's a link to my old thread.
Warm engine misfire solved
To access the fuel pump, lift up the back seat cushion. The pump is right there.
The tabs holding the fuel lines on are brutal and break very easily.
It's also possible the the fuel pump sock is plugged solid too.
