"Pit Bull" is not a breed. The AKC recognizes Stafforshire Terriers and the UKC recognizes American Pit Bull Terrier. My dog was bred by a kennel that uses the UKC definition of a "pit bull", which is slightly more forgiving that the AKC description.
Saying APBT or American Pit Bull Terrier is a bit of a mouthfull at times, so Pit Bull became the common short cut. And that has been turned into somethign evil by people that don't know any better.

Are you talking about how they say ownign a pitbull can be a challenge? I never said it wasn't. I was objecting to the idea of Pit Bulls as inhumane man and baby killers.

ITA. I've had neighbors who bred the dogs to fight, and even having taught the dogs to be vicious against other dogs, they were still good tempered around people. A few times they jumped the fence to their back yard, and were found playing with the local neighborhood kids - to the parents horror of course.
And then there are people i know who have pits that are not trained to fight, and are probably some of the best, most well behaved and lovable dogs in the world.
There's alot of misconceptions about this breed, and frankly most of it is complete and utter BS.

A little rough statistical analysis I did earlier...
How many pit bulls are there in the United States? estimated 500,000.
In 20 years (longer than the average lifespan of a pit bull), there were 238 fatal dog bite injuries. Assuming to 50% attributable to Rotts and Pits was split 50/50, that is 47 fatal dog bites. Round to 50 for math.
We will assume that one dog killed one person, for simplicity. We will also assume all these fatal attacks were the dog's fault (NOT a safe assumption).
The chance of a given pit bull fatally attacking a person over the dog's lifetime is 0.01%, a statistically insiginificant number.

Case in point on how stupid some Americans are - when I first go Bella as pup, my ex brought her to work and all the girls form the office came out and cuddled her, pat her, etc. "Oh she is so cute...so adorable...I love her color" then one girl asked "What is she?" I said "American Staffordshire Terrier" the girl was "Huh?" so I said "a.k.a. Pit Bull" She instantly bolted up-right and stepped back - from a frikkin' puppy "Wow those are dangerous!" "Yeah," I said "she almost licked you to death!" Now that's a moron!
