are pitbulls still unrecognized by the AKC?

last I heard, they didnt even consider pitbulls an official breed. not my words, theirs.

while i am a dog lover, i own four, i dont especially like pitbulls. its one of the only , if not the only, dog i dont like. theyre overly aggressive towards other dogs. by nature? thats arguable. i take my dogs to the dog park all the time. there are rotts, dobies, and shepherds etc.. always getting along with each other. whenever a pit happens to show up, they usually get into to it with other dogs. my wife's old akita-mix was fond of doing this as well. we ended up getting rid of it. anyways, besides my lack of favor for them, i do not agree with an outright ban. i think there should be severe penalties for the owner of any dog that mauls a human being or even another dog. whether provoked or not (unless under criminal circumstances). this shouldnt even be an issue if the dog is properly restrained when it is supposed to be. there isnt enough(any?) scientific evidence to firmly state that X breed of dogs are vicious by nature. if that was the case, maulings would be waay more common. i think most of the maulings we hear about are from people who dont raise their dogs appropriately, intentional mis-treat their dogs or are just results of a big dog that went out of control.
i think anyone caught connected to the dog-fighting industry should face serious criminal liabilities in addition to civil. those type of people are the scum of our society. look at what those Presa Canarios (sp?) did to that poor woman in SF! absolutely disgusting
anyone who knows or should know that their specific dog has a voilent propensity should either get rid of it or face the consequences when the sh*t hits the fan.

*if there are severe penalties introduced for owning a vicious dog that attacks someone, then everyone with half a brain will think long and hard about what kind of dog they keep and how they keep them. Ive met people who have scary dogs. one of my dad's wealthier clients, yeeears ago, had FIVE vicious dobies. he had those things well secured in his backyard. they were trained security dogs and he handled them with extreme care. unfortunately, most people dont.
