As far as this thread goes I don't support the ban but I can see how it would come about. There are not alot of deaths from dog attacks but what there are mostly involve children and two thirds of all fatal attacks involve Pit bull. Considering Pitbulls only makeup one percent of the total US dog population that's a telling stat. I've owned big dogs all my life, would I own a Pitbull with my three kids around? Nope, I wouldn't take the chance because one time would be one time to many.

There are over 25 breeds that are commonly mistaken as pit bulls. A good many dog bites are never reported. I have a pit bull and I have talked to people that also own pit bulls and even we have problems identifying pit bulls correctly all of the time. The stats from www.statsoutofyourass.com just are not true. Researchers are constantly frustrated in attempts to correlate breed type with fatal and non-fatal dog attacks. Anyone that claims to have accurate numbers is usually using cooked numbers for to bolster their own opinions.

In testing done by the American Temperment Society, Pit Bulls, Amstaffs (American Staffordshire Terrier) and Rottwiliers were in the 82% percentile in testing. The overall pass rate is 80%. Golden Retrievers (considered a family dog) tested at 77%, Chihuahuas at 71%, Greyhounds at 81%, and Lhasa Apso at 71%.I recommend looking up your favorite breed at www.atts.org . Make sure to look up the ones you consider good family dogs as well. There are arounf 20 human fatalities a year.

As for dogs and kids, many recommend to NEVER leave a child, especially a small child, alone with any dog. In the case of the Cocker Spaniel and the kid that was bit in my home, my mom and the kid's mother only left the room for a minute when the little bastard tried to kiss Jasper, the Cocker Spaniel. No dog is 100% safe.
