I have a 2000 SVT and was wondering if someone could help me out? When I'am on the freeway and hit anywhere from 75-80 my interior and exterior lights dim, not constant, kinda like a flicker, like I have an amp and it's pulling to much power from the battery. The car feels normal and runs normal when this happening. I've had the battery for about 2 years and have not changed the spark plug wires since I've owned the car. The car has 67,000 and does not misfire or show any problems until I hit 75 or 80 mph. Any info on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

If your the original owner and it has 67,xxx miles on it, its most likely time to change the plugs and wires...also have a test done on your alternator, it might be going.

Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.

First things first: Get some real data.

Use a decent digital voltmeter (If you don't have one, you should) and monitor your car's voltage while driving.

If the car's voltage is really dropping at higher engine RPMs, it likely indicates an alternator problem.

If the indicated voltage doesn't drop - yet your lights still flicker or dim, you have wiring problems elsewhere in the car.

Could old plugs cause a dimming of the lights? How?

Old wires/plugs can not cause dimming lights at a high speed, unless they are shorting out. That seems absolutly unrelated.

Take it to Advance or AZ and have them test it. The machine they have tests the battery and runs some load tests on the alternator. You'll know what's wrong in 2 minutes.

I had this same problem. The alt. was putting out about 40 amps, way too low The brushes in the alt were shot. New brushes, no more dim lights.

BTW, removal of the alt. on a Duratec is a major pain.

Yeah I would first get your alternator checked. I just changed mine and yes it is a PITA but after changing it once, it will be alot easier if I have to change it again.

How-To's if you have never done it are available. (Duratec maintenance, stickied at the top).

Test it, like stated, and I bet you aren't making enough amperage with a load.
