Michael:

Use this web site - www.onlinedocs.andersonpublishing.com to read Ohio Revised Code and Administrative Code on exhaust systems.

Then you can compare this system to the regulations.

Ohio Revised Code 4513.22

Ohio Administrative Code 4501:2-1-14

This is the answer I recieved from the Ohio State Highway Patrol

The link is not working go figure, I'm still working on it

When you fight it...try to get a written statement from the sales manager or the salesman stateing that this is the exhaust the car was sold with. That will help sway your way even more, even though its obvious the judge is going to say it's a waste of time. But just in case you get a dick and he says pay the fne, you can take the dealership to court and get your money that way...(or just talk to the dealership before taking them to court and make them pay, but be calm about it)

No vehicle shall be equipped with a muffler cutout, bypass or similar device which would produce excessive smoke or gas, or permit any other chemical to flow into or upon the exhaust pipe or muffler of such vehicle, or equipped in any other way to produce or emit smoke or dangerous or annoying gases from any portion of such vehicle, other than the ordinary gases emitted by the exhaust of an internal combustion engine under normal operation.
(B) No motor vehicle including motorcycles shall be equipped with an exhaust system which would produce any excessive, and/or unusual noise.
(C) All motorcycles must be equipped with mufflers having baffle plates as required by law.
(D) Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a standard muffler for said type of vehicle or one that meets all of the above requirements.
HISTORY: (former HSp-1-14); Eff 1-15-68
Rule promulgated under: RC 119.03
Rule authorized by: RC 4513.

Looks like a fairly broad definition.

[§ 4513.22.1] § 4513.221. Regulation of vehicle and engine noise in unincorporated areas.
(A) The board of county commissioners of any county, and the board of township trustees of any township subject to section 505.17 of the Revised Code, may regulate passenger car and motorcycle noise on streets and highways under their jurisdiction. Such regulations shall include maximum permissible noise limits measured in decibels, subject to the requirements of this section.
(B) Regulations establishing maximum permissible noise limits measured in decibels shall prohibit the operation, within the speed limits specified herein, of a passenger car or motorcycle of a type subject to registration at any time or under any condition of load, acceleration, or deceleration in such manner as to exceed the following maximum noise limits, based on a distance of not less than fifty feet from the center of the line of travel:
(1) For passenger cars:
(a) When operated at a speed of thirty-five miles per hour or less, a maximum noise limit of seventy decibels;
(b) When operated at a speed of more than thirty-five miles per hour, a maximum noise limit of seventy-nine decibels.

Did the Policeman have a DB meter and were you doing 35mph or over 35 mph?

In MA, you can't put any type of "aftermarket" system on the car....that ambiguous verbiage is pretty dumb as that would mean ANY system from Midas, Pep boys, etc would be illegal....and I'm not talking about performance exhausts...

You forget, we live in Georgia. No one really cares how loud your exhaust is. You could run around town with open headers and the cops wouldn't give a second glance, but if you haven't updated your tags, watch out!

I was doing about 20-25 miles an hour, speed limit was 25. I took a turn, cop was sitting in appartment complex. I drive by and he comes after me. I saw him clocking and went like 23ish to be safe. The guy had no db reading, and he had absolutely no reason to even come after me. My car was quiet as can be at around 23mph in fourth gear. Maybe like 1500 rpms...my car doesnt even make sound at that point.
