OK - I have a 95 contour GL, 2L 5spd.

I am planning to sell. It has 111,000 miles.

It needs the following:
New timing belt (Current belt worn but not failed)
New EGR valve
AC recharge

The vehicle just passed PA state saftey and emissions inspection. Has new breaks, good tires, etc.

So - My question is. Should I sell it knowing that it should have the work done or should I do the work (or have it done).

I'm thinking that an EGR valve would be an easy job for a non-mechanic handy guy. I also bought a recharge kit with AC sealant. That may cool the AC for a while. Then I leave the timing belt alone. And get what I can for the car.

Any as is offers? South East PA.

yeah those are pretty easy things for you to do and would definitely help sell the car easier.

Keeping it could be an option. I want a pickup truck though. If I can get a decent enough price for it its gone. If I can only get a couple of bucks then, yes, I will keep it till it dies.

fix the two easy things on it, and sell it. Just tell the person who is buying it about the timing belt. If it goes on them soon after they buy the car they might come after you and yell like banshees. Also, if you tell them about it they might see you as an honest person who knows about the condition of the car and what not and feel more "secure" in buying it.

Which would be stupid (not directed at you elraido)... I'd hope that anyone that buys a 10 yr old car w/ over 100k would have sense enough to know that these repairs will need done sooner or later & ask for service history before laying down any cash. But there are those that don't have a clue & will [censored].

Something else to consider:
Unfortunately, the car really won't have much higher value, if at all, if those things were fixed before you sell.

Welcome to the CEG.
Give the buyer a bill of sale that states the year, make, model, and agreed upon price along with "this vehicle is being sold as is, no warranty." Make sure that you and the buyer sign this, keep a copy for yourself also. They will have no leg to stand on as they were made fully aware that there was no warranty. You are a private seller and therefore have no legal obligation to provide one.
That said, I hope you decide to hang on to the tour. Stop on by the North East section and say hi!

My '98 Mystique needed a bunch of work, and when I sold it,I was going to sell it certified and emission tested. So the buyer gives me the money and I drop the car off to have it inspected, cash is handed over, buyer just needs to go to the DMV. I get a phone call a few hours later saying my car needs $2000 in repairs and labour and the buyer wants his money back. Well,I had just used the $1800 I sold my car for to buy my Contour for $1600. I had to get a full refund from the dealer, pay the buyer back his $1800,plus I was stuck with a bill for $80 to have the car inspected because he didn't buy the car and then I went back to the dealer and traded the Mystique in for $1000 and paid $600 cash for the Contour which in turn needed $1600 in repairs.
