Originally posted by N-terst8: Hey guys, its me with another problem. Actually not my problem, my girlfriends.
For about the past 4 months she has been having problems with using the bathroom. She has what feels like severe constapation (sp?) and can go about 6 days without using the bathroom before she has to go to the emergency room or take a laxative. Well, we went to the doctor again today and they ran several tests including IBS. All were good. She is perfectly healthy, she is not anerexic (sp?), but slightly underweight by a couple of pounds. She eats a normal diet as much as she can til it hurts too much to eat anymore. The thing is it looks like she hardly eats a thing, like half a piece of chicken. She also is very bloated but the CAT scans and the X-rays they ran on her show that there is no air there, or stool samples at all in her intestines.
She has seen too many doctors and she is too young to have these kinds of problems. Not one dam doctor can find a freakin problem. Its like she eats very small meals a few times a day and eventually she said it feels like it packs up on her and then she can't eat hardly anyhting else. Yet the doctor's X-rays show no stool!!! But shes bloated and her stomach kills her. Sometimes we have to take her to the emergency room if it gets too bad. To keep it from going bad she has to pretty much rely on laxatives, which is not normal to "rely" on them. It is really frustrating to be going through this. Maybe you guys know anything about this? Know anyone that had something like this? I'm just praying to god for a miracle.
Thanks guys,
Steve
Does she exercise? That would certainly help.
How much fiber is she getting a day? Probably not what she needs. I had a point where I was eating two bowls of shreaded wheat and a slim fast shake for breakfast, which ended up being a good 60% of my fiber for the day, in one meal. That will make you poop!
Hydration, as someone mentioned. Avoid cafeine, anything with carbonation (in general). Nothing beats water. If urine has any color or odor, it means you are dehydrated (really).

Where any of the X-Rays and CT scans done using a contrast media? i.e., barium swallow or enema? If so, and there is no stool, there may either be a worm and/or a valve prolapse in the stomach.
BTW, this info comes from a radiologist who I read this to.

Not knowing your G/F at all, the only thing that REALLY binds people up besides TOO much roughage (e.g. salads, bran cereals, etc.) would be the use of opiates or opiate-derived painkillers. (e.g. Oxycodone, Percocet, etc). People can't process the chemical in opium without getting "bound up" so to speak......just a thought....

I would reccommend a diet much higher in fluids, mostly water. Have her drink 6-8 8oz glasses A DAY, EVERY DAY. Dehyrdation is the biggest cause of severe constipation. OTC fiber supplements can also help move things along, many older people have this same problem and good hydration and supplemental fiber usually work. Things to look for internally- possibly a blockage somewhere in the small intestine or along the digestive tract. A colonoscophy (spelling??) might be a good idea as well, to check for pollups or any other problems. Hope this helps. BTW, I am only an EMT, but I have read a good deal of medical info/books. And I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Good luck to you and her man.

Dietary Fiber is something that everyone needs to stay regular.. Almost all fruits and vegetables have fiber. Some good sources of fiber are Prunes, Prune juice, Shredded Wheat, Raisin Bran and beans.

I see what you guys are saying, and thanks. We've consulted a doctor even had a GI (Digestive System Doctor) fly in from Nebraska. The GI said that he thought it was constapation, but never had an X-ray done or anything. She has had a colonoscophy (sp?), and they didn't find anything. Except for a slightly inflammed intestine. Gave her a couple of meds for that. Her diet consists of everything. She eats fruits, veggies, lean meat, some sweets, and very high fiber. She takes some Raisin Bran with her and for breakfast she usually has a bran muffin. All she drinks is lots and nothing but water. She's visiting with this GI before memorial weekend and we'll tell the doctor that the X-rays show no stool.
We seem to be stumped so maybe this doctor can help us out some more. I'll research this "worm" thing, I only thought dogs got worms, maybe not.
Thanks for your help guys!

Wow. IIRC, there is a procedure when the patient is unconscious, that they can feed a small tube w/ a camera in it wayyyy up your whole tract, or even down through the stomach. It really sounds like a blockage or kink somewhere, kind of like a garden hose. But a GI tract doctor will know best. Humans can get tape worms, but dogs are more likely to get them since they eat raw meat and other items that wouldn't be sanitary enough for human consuption. And it doesn't sound like symptoms from a tape worm. Good luck!

xrays are for bones and calcified stuff. They may show air bubbles and stool, but it's really unspecific in your girlfriend's situation
People get worms, but I don't think they cause constipation, but rather the opposite. I could be wrong. Also, it's pretty hard to pick up worms from the normal US diet - it's usually from travel to other countries.
This sounds like constipation, as it seems like they've ruled out obstruction. Since the diet and exercise seem ok, I'm thinking a few things: 1) some sort of decrease in colon motility - could be neurologic (i.e. colon isn't getting signals from brain to move things along) 2) she could be un-potty trained. Does she ever get the urge to go? If so, does she hold it back or does she immediately sit down to go? Sometimes holding it can train the body to hold it, even when you don't want it too! 3) Some people clench their sphincter and think that they're trying to push feces out. Wierd, I know, but very possible. Biofeedback is the cure - you re-learn how to push out and how/when you're clenching the sphincter.
I hope this helps. PM me if you need some more info or want to talk about this in private.

Thanks guys, but she does try to go to the bathroom, and the only time she uses it is when the laxatives work. We are thinking about doing another test for IBS because it runs in her family and the bloodtest did show slightly elevated for that. So we are going to look into it some more. Thanks again guys, for your help.
