Well I had the spring recall work done on my 98 2.0 contour, and now I hear something new. When I turn the wheel one direction, and then the other I hear a clunk. The sound is coming from the top of the strut. I can see the very top move about a quarter of an inch when the clunk happens. Could ford not have tightened everything up well enough or will my free fix actually cost me something?

Humm, I just put 2 new springs in my 96 Contour. Both were broke. Is there a recall for springs breaking?

For the clunk. My RH side was doing that. Not sure if the broke spring had to do with it as the LH was also broke and did not clunk. On the RH side, the top strut bearing was bad on my car. I could not find a strut bearing in short oder anywhere so I went cheap and rebuild my old strut bearing. No more clunking.

The recall coverage for my '96 ended December 31st, yours might be up too, unless you had it done before the 31st, then you might be in luck.

I would check the torque on the top strut nut. If it is not battened down to value (34 ft/lbs) it will hop around. Caused by force the strut mount (thrust bearing) should be absorbing, but if not tightened down properly, travels all the way to the top. Hope that helps!

Well I went to Ford to have them check out the problem and that was it, things were not tightened up enough. When I left they left the papers in the car with pleasent "suggestions" one was an alignment. Now correct me if I am wrong, but I thought anytime you did suspension work you were supposed to do an alignment?

It should be done, yes, but not as part and parcel of the installation of suspension components.. For another charge, certainly.
