the idler (ringed red in that pic) is needed to move the belt away from the engine mount otherwise it will catch on it.
the guy who is fitting the kit (yet its a normal focus 2.0L JRSC kit) has already been to the junk yard and got a load of focus bits (including alternator etc). the alternator from focus still wont fit so he is gonna probably fit a smaller nissan alternator.
