I HAVE READ MANY POSTS ON TORQUE CONVERTERS AND TSS and Solenoid valves etc

My problem is all intermittent

After some hard drives I get the low speed "Bang Shift"

1 out of 10 hard drives

I get the 1744 about once per 10 drives

Is it the TSS or the solenoid valve?

GURUS please advise

If you haven't replaced tss, I'd start with that. Also, install transgo shift correction kit from www.bulkpart.com

THANKS

The TSS looks easy to install using pictures in the threads

The Shift Correction kit listed for $30 was not described in the reference you gave. Any threads that I can review?
I need to see if that is in my capability

THANKS AGAIN

1744 TC slip is exactly that, the PCM calls for TC lock up (or some percentage of lock up) and the TC locks. The TSS and engine RPM are compared for the speed, gear ratio and percentage of lock up. Any deviation (slippage) is detected and after a set amount of time (with slippage) a code is set. I doubt that changing the TSS will correct your problem (1744) but for under $30 bucks and some swearing it cant hurt.

Also be advised that if it is TC slippage you will need to replace the TC and reman the VB (with updates) to fix it.

A good scanner that can display engine RPM and TS speed would be helpful as well as a road test with a gauge connected to the TC tap.

I agree with Mercman and BT, but would also like to add this is a text book CD4E failure; due to a worn valve body.

THANKS

This is my 2nd TC. First one a 30K

The problem is very intermittent

I drain [and replace] 4 quarts of Merkon 3 at every oil change [3000 miles]

If I drive near or over 80 MPH I get the 1744 hit more often

It takes 5 Hits to get 1744 as I have read in the THREADS

I like the car but this problem has got to me

Any info is greatly appreciated

THANKS AGAIN

You need to repair the bypass valve with an updated (modified design). Just changing the TC wont fix it for long. A bad bypass valve is like ridding the clutch with a manual. You can do it but the clutch (TC in your case) wont last long.
