I don't know...
If he was using profanity like they say he was, he was out of line...
But come on, this is his mother in IRAQ for crying out loud...
But again, it doesn't change the fact that he needs to be respectful to his teachers and the authority around him...
It probably could have been handled differently though by the authority around him...

No, the teacher was the one being disrespectful. The teacher needs to get his head out of his ass and let the student be excused for a few minutes so he can properly end the call...WITH HIS MOM IN IRAQ!!
The bigger problem is the principal(s) and the punishment backing the teacher.

It's reasons like this that are precisely why the rules allows students to carry cellphones on them at all rather than ruling them out altogether. Extraordinary/emergency circumstances sometimes warrant their use. For all they knew his mom was in some medevac tent dying.
There's no reason why the teacher, in this situation, couldn't have asked him to take it into the Teacher's Lounge or the Office to have the conversation without disrupting other students or openly breaking the rules.

The CNN article leaves out some important facts. After he refused to hang up and told the teacher who he was talking to, the teacher tried to physically remove the phone from him, causing him to hang up. That alone opened the school up to litigation. He got upset, used profanity and refused to leave the principals office after he recieved a second call from his mother and they refused to let him answer it.

If that important information left out by CNN is in fact true, that's seriously [censored] up. I for one would have been dragged out of the school in cuffs for attempted murder with whatever I could grab at the time. Screw the teacher, screw the school, they are the ones that are wrong here. Period.

Still doesn't change the fact that HE needs to be respectful to his teachers and principal...
And where in the world did you see me take any blame away from either of the parties involved? Eh?
I didn't.
Let's look at this in a different way...
If you are a teacher, you walk up, and you ask a student using a cell phone to put the phone down...He looks at you very defiantly and says "It's my mother in Iraq!!" How the crap is the teacher supposed to know the difference between a mother in Iraq and a drug deal? Eh? Exactly...
The rule is no cellphone use during the school day...All the teacher knows is that the student is using a cell phone, therefore completely within her rights to stop the call...
I'm not taking any responsibility for this away from the teacher, but don't take it away from the student either...
He could have made a better decision and contacted a teacher immediately about the phone call, and things may have gone a little differently...

First, students shouldnt have phones on in school. I know though, we had pagers and we always had them on. If your the teacher and a kid says its his mom in Iraq, what are the chances he is being honest? Maybe the kid has a reputation for being a goof/prankster and the teacher just thought he was being his disruptive self? Didnt his mom know he would be in school anyway, seems dumb on all aspects.....
