I have 98 CSVT E0, when shift to 1st gear, shifter moved to center position, like it is in the 3rd gear. For gear 2 - R, the shifter move back to center. I can move the stick sideway (left and right) like in neutral. So, after I shifted to 1st gear, the stick stay in center. I slowly release the clutch with a bit of more gas, the car move forward.
Before I take to a transmission shop, I like to educated myself first. Please explain and tell me what is wrong? Can it be a simple fix?
Thanks in advance for any response.

first and easiest, pull up the shifter boot and check to see if the long screws holding the shifter in place are loose. there should be 4 screws, one in each corner, but ford only used 2 screws in some cars. if they're loose, tighten them
contours, deloreans & fiats, oh my!

Sounds like a broken / disconnected cable. As you sit in the car with the window open and move the shifter left to right do you hear anything going on under the hood like you usually would?
Assuming that you don't (or are not sure) from the step above you need a person to do this for you and look under the hood at the top of the shift tower and confirm that there is no movement, also check for disconnected ends of the cable. If there is no cable movement and it is connected to the transmission either is is disconnected in the center console of the cable is broken.
Good luck!

All screws inside the shifter boot are tight. Nothing seems to be lose or broken inside.
I can see there is movement from the top of the shift tower when moving the shift stick up and down. And there is click sound when move the shifter.
Tomorrow, I will jackup the car and check from underside do the visual check at the cable end plastic connector.

just to add from what i know there is no cables to shift the car it is Rods for the 2.5 with the MTX.does the car go in any other gears. other than the one its in? If the car is stuck in one gear i know your prob i have had the same prob for like 4 months and cant afford to fix it. my best bet is to take it to a shop and let them deal with it if you have the money to. Other than that your [censored] outa luck.

Took the driver side wheel off, I can see both shifter cable end plastic connectors. The uppper cable end disconnected from the pin. Push the cable end back into the pin. And the shifter back to action. Drove around the block, all gear works now. Wonder how it can slide out from the pin. May be the pin hole is lose.
Anyway, I am going to replace both cable end. I need to order the parts Monday.

WOW serious misinformation. 95, 96, and 97 cars had rod shifters. It didn't matter if they were v6 or 4 cyl. BTW cable shifter suck cus they break and cause misalignment of shifts. I am replacing the cable shifter bushings in my dads 2000 protege next weekend with bronze bushing instead because the factor cable shifter bushings suck.
