I was just wondering if anyone has a good solution for attaching a license plate in the rear of the car. The threads on the back of my '96 are pretty shot, and the screws holding the plate on right now aren't on tight, so the plate rattles around.
I was looking at some aftermarket anchors with screws at some autoparts stores, but I'm not sure how I'd get something like that to work. Any ideas?

Have you done this, or know that it can be done? I asked a Ford parts dealer about this, and he said that the license plate part is integrated into the whole rear reflector combo-thingy.

I know what you are talking about. I've never done it.. but I know it would work. Get a small drill bit and make the hole a tad bigger so it can accept a push in license plate holder (y'know, those white plastic things). I know that the license plate screw holes are basically just holes you put the screw in.. so, just make the hole a bit larger and use the regular license plate anchors that 97% or all other vehicles use. Hope that helps. If not.. there's alwasy duct tape.

Mine does this too and aggravates the hell out of me knowing it bounces loosely every time I hit a bump in the road I was thinking of doing some 3m doublesided tape to solve the issue If I ever need to remove or replace the plate I've just remove the tape residue with Bug remover.

couldn't you just get some larger screws to hold the license plate...the larger screws will rethread that plastic insert and should fit tightly...

there's also enough material to thread the lower license plate mounts.
You could just hack off the split/striped plastic threaded section and use nuts. Alot of the license plate bolt kits come with nuts. I think you can access the backside without having to remove the whole assembly... but if you can't access it, then you could just hot glue or JB weld the nut to the plastic.

I had the same problem, with the screws being completely rusted in. I dremeled the screw heads off, and bought 4 heavy duty bolts with a thick thread. Just drilled 4 holes with a bit, and then ran the new bolts in... looks great.

Sooooo.... lemme get this straight... I can just cut off the doo-dads and drill new holes where the old mounts are? There's nothing behind there that I need to worry about drilling into? I prefer to ask 3 times before I go and screw something up! Thanks guys.

This is a common problem. Ford has a solution for it. Go to Ford Parts and tell them whats going on, They'll sell you this piece of plastic that spans the two top holes (or bottom for that matter). I forget exactly how it works, I am assuming adhesive and using the empty holes for support but I could be wrong.
